Comfort food to me is warming, luxurious, and at its best, homemade. It is heavenly food that makes you drool, and will always leave you wanting to come back for more. That is what Bostwick’s Chowder House is all about. From the moment you arrive and are seated in their small, quaint restaurant, you begin to realize that this will be a very unique experience. You are greeted by a welcoming staff and menus with clipboards where you can order from. The clipboard is a fully loaded and organized sheet that covers everything on the menu from soup to entrees to the sides. It was a very easy and unusual way to order your food.
We began with the Lobster Bisque and the New England Clam Chowder. When I saw the thickness of the chowder and smelt the clams, my heart skipped a beat. From the first mouthful to the last, I lingered and enjoyed every bite. It was creamy and silky and the chowder sent me to heaven. The Lobster Bisque had such a wonderful lobster taste and the broth was exceptionally flavorful. Just remembering the chowders puts me in a very happy place. Next came the lobster fritters with a sweet and sour sauce for dipping. The lobster fritters consisted of lumps of lobster, and corn in a light batter fried and served hot. It was just divine. The fried oysters were supreme, one of my personal favorites and my grandmother’s. She would have enjoyed these plump oysters with the roasted corn salsa and amazing remoulade sauce. The fried oysters were served with fresh french fried potatoes and delicious coleslaw. The lobster roll was filled to the brim with meaty lobster and celery in a traditional mayonnaise dressing served in a toasted bun. It was outrageously good. For desert was the peanut butter pie; an Oreo crust with a creamy peanut butter middle and a thick chocolate topping with mini peanut butter candies. The dessert was just glorious.
How do you give a chowder house that serves food on paper plates and bowls and plastic cutlery a five star rating? Let me explain. When the food, service and ambiance molds together for perfection, and you walk out thinking when can I return. This is when you realize that you have had the most subliminal experience ever. Bostwick’s Chowderhouse is a very busy and popular restaurant in East Hampton, even off season. After just one visit you will understand why.
