Back to Brooklyn
On Monday December 23, 2013 my sister and I went back to Brooklyn. She went to T+L Catering in Brooklyn. She has been so busy this year she did not want to cook or have anybody bring food to her home that needed to be heated. We went through Canarsie and it was like going through a third world country. The neighborhood that I grew up in was unrecognizable. Everything was changed or torn down. That remained standing was clad in thick wrought iron bars. It looked like a jungle. After we picked up the food we asked the folks that work there where we could grab a bite to eat. As they laughed at us, I asked about Sonny’s Deli on 92nd street. They told us it was still there. We found it and it was still there and opened for business. We asked the guy how he stayed alive and he said between the Foster Avenue Food Market and a new BJs, he had a great lunch crowd. We ordered honey turkey on soft whole wheat hero with the works. The hero was a good foot in length. Each was $7.50. We ordered one each. The works are the following. A homemade roll is sliced lengthwise. Mayonnaise was spread on both sides of the roll. Honey maple turkey (Boar’s Head) was sliced on the machine. The portion was about 6-8 ounces. The next was freshly sliced iceberg lettuce, fresh sliced tomato, fresh sliced onion. Then Sonny sprinkles olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt and pepper. I cannot tell you how wonderful that sandwich is. No wonder he has lasted in business over 20 years. The sandwich was as good as I remembered it to be. That sandwich took me back to times and places of a different world. It was a wonderful world back then. It gave my sister and I a piece of our old Canarsie Brooklyn to remember, for a brief moment in time. Stay safe my fans and Bon Appetit.
