November Foods Hanukkah on Thanksgiving??????????
Today is the first day of November and all I can think about is food. My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. That nonsectarian day is filled with delicious dishes that are prepared once a year, although we always state we should make them more than once a year. I love Thanksgiving because it is all about the food. No gifts, cards, birthdays, just FOOD! But not this year. Thanksgiving and the first night of Hanukkah fall on the same night. It is the first and the last time this will ever happen in any of our lifetimes. It will be turkey and latkes. Since my daughter has taken over the job of frying the potato latkes, my kitchen will be very, very active. We actually might be cooking at the same time. It is this time of year that I begin to think of foods that I want to prepare. I always make my corn souffle and I would be beheaded by my nieces if I did not prepare it. I also make cranberry compote and a few deserts. I am brainstorming in my mind. Since I do not make the protein. Other family members put their stamp on those. I take the vegetable and desert part of the meal in addition to the salad and whatever else I prepare to prepare. Since this is the first night of Hanukkah, chocolate gelt will be involved. Since Hanukkah is a happy holiday, coins (gelt) are given out to the children, and chocolate as well. At some point in time the gelt became made of chocolate. I do not know when that came about. Gelt is usually made out of milk chocolate. There are other traditional dishes that I normally prepare such as brisket, applesauce, jelly donuts, roasted vegetables to name a few. I will make the formal holiday Hanukkah on Friday night. I have to admit I do love-making, preparing and cooking for the holidays. Stay safe my fans and Bon Appetit.
