Happy Halloween Then and Now
Halloween is a very special holiday. My great grandmother’s birthday was on Halloween. My daughter is named for her. My daughter loves Halloween. I think it is her favorite holiday. She loves to go trick or treating. She has gone trick or treating every year since birth. It is a nutritionists least favorite holiday because of the enormous amount of candy. I remember going trick or treating as a child. We would go trick or treating in my grandmother’s apartment building and then go trick or treating in Canarsie. What I remember most about trick or treating were the homemade goodies we would get. However that stopped when people started tainting candy with poison. The year that happened and from every Halloween thereafter, every candy bag had to be inspected. It is so sad that in society today that we have to be so cautious. I remember going through my daughter’s bag of treats every year and tossing the candies that were loose or not wrapped correctly. No longer were there homemade treats. If she received any they were tossed too. My belief was it is better to be safe than sorry. It is very sad that we feel this way. I bought candy yesterday and I will leave them out for the kids. I will also reserve some for the teenagers like my daughter that come in the evening. I also love the foods of Halloween. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin ravioli, pumpkin scones, to name a few. Enjoy this wonderful holiday. Stay safe my fans and Bon Appetit.
